Following news that the President of Tanzania continued to market the Mwambani-port project rather than choosing the more practical expansion of the prevailing Tanga port. ‘Just as the Serengeti highway he got it all wrong again. The international conservation community shouldn’t be fooled about his calming words said at the London conference a couple weeks back. I can just say that we Tanzanian gauge him by his behavior and not just his words plus actions are totally the opposite from what he states. Mwambani is a Tanzania marine park in which the ancient Coelacanth fish can be seen. Mwambani bay is extremely shallow and entirely inappropriate for a deep-sea port except if the whole bay is cleaned up and that will actually destroy the entire Coelacanth habitat.
As with his pet-project at Lake Natron where he wishes to have a factory for soda ash, he quickly ignores that it will demolish the breeding grounds for the whole flamingo population in East African. Does he even care? No he doesn’t. Most of Tanzania’s leading resources such as the Selous’ Stiegler’s Gorge are all under the risk and make absolutely no mistake, all that arises from the State House within Dar es Salaam.
Our sources also said that Since his statement in London not a single poaching leader was arrested or even charged. He received the list and is sitting on it. Mwambani is merely another sad instance how the environment is defiled. Residents have been virtually thrown out of their land where will they go if they were given very little for compensation. He speaks of the railway to link Mwambani and Musoma to Uganda. He is fantasizing. The Ugandans are working with Rwanda plus Kenya to construct a brand-new quick railway coming from Mombasa. More than 90 % of imports & exports for Uganda go through Mombasa. There isn’t any port worth talking about in Musoma and there’s no port in Uganda besides Port Bell or the Jinja pier. Yet he wishes to construct a railway to operate along the highway through Serengeti as if he can’t permit the road to utilize the southern route why wouldn’t he as well run the railway via Arusha through Lake Natron into Musoma. The Soda ash can be of course profitably exported through train from mining site into the port. Trust me, it is an extremely evil plan. Those against such plans, people who express that Mwambani is worth a lot more as a tourism destination eventually, are effortlessly criminalized and the media aren’t permitted to report on our issues. he said that he is almost crying for the future of his country since the environment has become a football and does not have an equal priority.
For the time being although the President of Tanzania Mr. Kikwete expressed his need to see this debatable project to go forward and just time will tell whether the funds can be increased to make this a realism or if the lack of international support could have the plans not function and return to the bottom compartments.
